5 Fast Facts About GMOs
- A GMO is a genetically modified organism. This means that it has had its DNA changed to express a trait that it did not originally.
- GMOs are already present in many common foods. In fact, most people probably aren’t even aware that they have consumed GMOs. There are only 10 commercial GMO crops (in the US). The most common GMOs are corn, canola and soy.
- GMOs are not always used in food for humans. Most of the time they are used in animal feed and have even been used in medications and vaccines. For instance, the Hepatitis B vaccine is a recombinant vaccine which is made using gene modification technology.
- The most desired GMO traits are insect resistance, resistance to disease, increased tolerance of herbicides and increased nutrition.
- The GMOs which are available have been proven to be safe and before a GMO is able to enter the commercial market it must undergo vigorous testing to prove that it is safe.
